My Background
My name is John McKay and I’m a secondary teacher with the Limestone District School Board in Kingston, Ontario. My math journey, given my current job, has been somewhat unique. I was the kid who always behind in math, struggling to keep up with the content being presented. Tutoring was not something that was explored for me as a student in high school. My math experience in high school left me thinking I was just a mediocre math student at best - which is probably how my teachers would have described me too.
It wasn’t until university that I first discovered Khan Academy. I remember having a breakthrough in my first year linear algebra class thanks largely in part to the support I could get from Khan Academy. I started to really like math, as well as the processes involved in learning math. Being able to pause a video, rewatch what was done, and hear the explanation again really provided the differentiation that I needed in order to become more successful in my university math classes.
What’s the problem I’m trying to solve?
Quite often it was difficult to find material that was geared towards what I was looking for. I found it difficult at times to find an example that would help me with the problem at hand. In January of 2020 - pre COVID, I started a Youtube channel that was home to the videos of my lessons geared towards the Ontario curriculum. The rational being students in my classes would have access to extra support free of charge, whenever they needed it.
